The Braid Harvesters
16 mm film, 5:00 min, 2013
Set in a desolate landscape, a mother and daughter work together to gather lost braids. Moving through an atmosphere of loss and longing, The Braid Harvesters evokes a tragedy that may have already occurred—or may still be to come.
The film was the first chapter of We Live on the Edge of Disaster and Imagine We Are in a Musical, a body of work exploring memory, ritual, kinship, and imagined worlds that would later develop into The Diamond Eye Assembly.
Installation
During an artist residency at Open Space in Victoria, The Braid Harvesters was presented as a looping film installation inside a small, improvised structure resembling a beach shelter. Constructed from found driftwood lashed together and covered in yellow fabric, the structure created an intimate viewing space, with the 16 mm film projected within it.
